German Car Buyers’ Willingness to Pay to Reduce CO2 Emissions

چکیده

Motorized individual transport strongly contributes to global CO2 emissions, due to its intensive usage of fossil fuels. Current political efforts addressing this issue (i.e. emission performance standards in the EU) are directed towards car manufacturers. This paper focuses on the demand side. It examines whether CO2 emissions per kilometer is a relevant attribute in car choices. Based on a choice experiment among potential car buyers from Germany, a mixed logit specification is estimated. In addition, distributions of willingness-to-pay measures for an abatement of CO2 emissions are obtained. The results suggest that the emissions performance of a car matters substantially, but its consideration varies heavily across the sampled population. In particular, some evidence on gender, age and education effects on climate concerns is provided. JEL classification: C25, D12, Q51

Cooperative Emissions Trading Game: International Permit Market Dominated by Buyers

Rapid reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions is required to mitigate disastrous impacts of climate change. The Kyoto Protocol introduced international emissions trading (IET) to accelerate the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The IET controls CO2 emissions through the allocation of marketable emission permits to sovereign countries. The costs for acquiring additional pe...

The Effect of Auto Tariff Protections on CO2 Emissions

According to released official statistics of greenhouse gas emissions in 2010, CO2, which is produced by fossil fuels and industrial processes, accounts for 65 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions. The transport sector, in turn, is responsible for 23% of CO2 emissions. Researchers have been claiming that car manufacturers have not made significant efforts to reduce the pollution lev...

Willingness to Pay of Air Passengers for Carbon-Offset

An important source of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is the air transport sector, which accounts for approximately 2% of global GHG emissions. Therefore, reducing GHG emissions from aircrafts has become a major challenge for transportation authorities worldwide. In recent years, much research has focused on tax ideas related to the CO2 emissions produced by air transport, such as...

Estimation of greenhouse gases emissions from urban traffic: a case study of Hamadan city

Background and Objective: Transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and CH4) which causes global warming. “Stop-and-go” driving and congested traffic flow results in a decrease in average car speeds, an increase in traffic incidents, and finally escalates GHGs emissions. Hence, congestion is directly related to carbon emissions. The objective of this stu...

Are Consumers Myopic? Evidence from New and Used Car Purchases

We investigate whether car buyers are myopic about future fuel costs. We estimate the e↵ect of gasoline prices on short-run equilibrium prices of cars of di↵erent fuel economies. We then compare the implied changes in willingness-to-pay to the associated changes in expected future gasoline costs for cars of di↵erent fuel economies in order to calculate implicit discount rates. Using di↵erent as...
